Semi-Pro Sorta Scores
Will Ferrell's latest rowdy comedy managed to toss up a box-office win with a $15.2 million opening, though that figure is half what had been predicted. And Fox News gossiper Roger Friedman claims the hoops flick was a flop, especially when compared the opening weekends for Ferrell's last two flicks, the skating comedy Blades of Glory ($33 million) and Talladega Nights ($47 million). Both Blades and Talladega were rated PG-13, while Semi-Pro is rated R. As for the rest of the top five: Last weekend's number one, the assassination thriller Vantage Point, dropped to number two with $13 million, taking its two-week total to $41 million; The Spiderwick Chronicles dropped from second to third with $8.8 million ($55.1 million for three weeks); The Other Boleyn Girl, starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, debuted in fourth with $8.3 million; and Jumper fell from third to fifth with $7.6 million ($66.8 million for three weeks). The weekend's other big debut, the Reese Witherspoon/Christina Ricci fantasy Penelope, debuted in eighth with $4 million. Overall, receipts were down for a third consecutive weekend, as the top 12 movies earned 25 percent less than the top 12 last year.
